Costa Rica-Taiwan - Tempisque River, Guanacaste This bridge connects the mainland of Costa Rica with the peninsula of Nicoya by crossing the Tempisque river.
It was designed, built, and donated by the government of Taiwan in 2003. Unfortunately, president Oscar Arias decided to end Costa Rica's relationship with the government of Taiwan, a country that had helped Costa Rica so much in the past. This was done to open Costa Rica's relationship with the communist government of China, in the hopes that Costa Rica would get more economical benefits from more powerful mainland China.
Costa Ricans are grateful people and this move went against most of the people's principles. Now the bridge is becoming known as "El puente de la puñalada" (Back stab bridge) by all Costa Ricans in disapproval of the president's decision.
