This National Park in the Tempisque river basin in the province of Guanacaste, was created in 1974 to protect its famous cave systems. Barra Honda was formed by tectonic movements which raised this structure above the plains. The caves and waterways there today were then carved out by rain filtering through limestone over millennia.
